Precision Laser Cutting Services in Cambridge
Seaborn Manufacturing provides production laser cutting for Cambridge OEMs and established industrial manufacturers that need repeatable, build-to-print metal components. Our fiber laser systems process sheet, heavy plate and structural tube profiles, with us reviewing the tolerances against material thickness, geometry and end use rather than assuming every part is the same.
From our 20,000 sq ft Waterloo facility, approximately 15 minutes from Cambridge, we support repeat orders and production runs in carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum and selected specialty alloys. CNC programming, revision control and downstream forming or welding allow one supplier to manage more of your component package. We are best suited to commercial RFQs with drawings, defined quantities and ongoing manufacturing demand.

Heavy Plate Laser Cutting in Cambridge
Seaborn gives Cambridge manufacturers access to 20 kW fiber laser cutting for steel plate up to 2 inches thick capacity not commonly available from general sheet metal laser shops. Heavy plate can remain a cut only requirement or move through CNC forming and welding in the same Waterloo facility. This is best suited to industrial OEM parts, structural equipment components, skids and recurring production packages with defined drawings and production quantities.
Heavy Plate Laser Cutting Capabilities
| Material | Max. laser-cut plate thickness |
|---|---|
| Carbon / mild steel | up to 2 inches (51 mm) |
| Stainless steel | up to 1.0 inches (25 mm) |
| Aluminum | up to 1.0 inches (25 mm) |
| Copper | up to 1/2 inch (13 mm) |
Maximum thickness does not imply one tolerance across all materials and geometries. Edge quality, minimum feature size and tolerance are confirmed during RFQ review.

We Lasercut all of Your Metals
Seaborn provides industrial metal laser cutting for Cambridge OEMs and established manufacturers. We process carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum and selected specialty alloys from customer controlled drawings. Our strongest client match is repeating production work, multi part packages and components that benefit from forming, hardware insertion or welding after cutting.
Laser cutting flat sheets of Aluminium
Seaborn laser cuts common aluminum grades including 5052 and 6061 for production components requiring low weight and corrosion resistance. Cut quality and tolerance depend on alloy, thickness and geometry; sheet work can commonly achieve ±0.005 inch where the application permits. Maximum aluminum thickness is 1.00 inch, subject to review of the specific part requirements.
Custom Laser Cutting of Carbon Steel
Carbon alloys and mild steel are Seaborn’s primary laser cut materials, including common structural and sheet grades such as A36, 44W/300W, 50W/350W, 1008 and 1020. Galvanized, 4140 and selected wear-resistant grades can be reviewed by application. Our laser capacity extends up to 2 inch steel plates. Our strongest fit as a vendor is production parts, repeat releases and components that continue into forming or welding.
Stainless Steel and Hastelloy, Laser Cutting Cambridge
For stainless and selected nickel alloys, Seaborn controls laser parameters and assist gas to produce clean edges and repeatable dimensions. These materials are used in food processing, energy and industrial equipment where corrosion resistance matters. Quote requests should identify the exact grade, thickness, finish, tolerances and production quantity; maximum stainless thickness is 1 inch.
Our Metal Laser Cutting Process
Our laser cutting process begins with a complete RFQ and controlled drawing package review. File review, nesting, cutting, inspection and any downstream fabrication are planned around the material, quantity, tolerance and delivery requirement. This provides a repeatable route for production work and reduces avoidable questions after an order is released.
1. File Review and Validation
We review the dimensioned PDF and available DXF or DWG files for material, thickness, tolerances, geometry and revision status. Cut files should be full scale, use closed profiles and identify inches or millimetres. Features should be drawn at the nominal or midpoint dimension specified by the print, with critical tolerances clearly called out.
2. CNC Laser Setup and Cutting
Approved files are programmed in CAM software, then nested by material, thickness and quantity to improve sheet utilization. The correct cutting parameters and assist gas are selected for the job before production begins. Repeat programs support consistency on future releases, subject to revision control.
3. Inspection and Finishing
Parts are inspected using methods appropriate to the drawing, tolerance and production risk. Required secondary work may include CNC forming, tapping, hardware insertion or welding, with outside finishing coordinated when specified. Inspection requirements are agreed during quoting so expectations are clear before production begins.
4. Fabrication Integration or Shipmen
Completed parts may ship as laser cut blanks or continue through forming, hardware insertion and welding to become finished components or assemblies. Final inspection is completed against the drawing and agreed requirements before parts are packaged for shipment.

Laser Cutting Services FAQ
Seaborn laser cuts carbon and mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum, galvanized material and selected specialty alloys. We focus on industrial, build to print components for Cambridge OEMs and established manufacturers, with material grade and thickness confirmed during RFQ review.
No, Seaborn is an industrial metal laser cutting and fabrication company; we do not quote wood, plywood, acrylic or general plastic cutting.
Laser cut sheet components can commonly be held to approximately ±0.005 inch (0.13 mm), but achievable tolerance depends on material, thickness, feature size, part geometry and edge requirements. Heavy plate and structural profiles may require different tolerances. Seaborn reviews critical dimensions during quoting so the inspection plan reflects the actual application.
Fiber laser cutting uses a focused beam and assist gas to separate metal accurately and efficiently. CNC programming controls the cutting path so features and profiles can be repeated from part to part. The process is well suited to production sheet, plate and compatible structural tube components for Cambridge area manufacturers.
For a qualified RFQ, provide a dimensioned PDF, material grade and thickness, order and annual quantities, required tolerances, revision level and target delivery date. Include DXF or DWG files when available and identify any forming, hardware, welding or finishing requirements. Seaborn will review manufacturability, material availability and production fit before quoting. Our best fit is recurring OEM work, production runs and multi operation fabricated components rather than consumer projects or small one off jobs.
Current maximum plate thicknesses: carbon or mild steel up to 2 inches (51 mm), stainless steel up to 1 inch (25 mm), aluminum up to 1 inches (25 mm), and copper up to 1/2 inch (13 mm). Actual cut suitability and edge requirements are reviewed against the grade, geometry and tolerance of each part.
Typical lead time for stand alone laser cut parts is approximately two to three weeks, subject to material availability, capacity and job complexity. Pricing is driven mainly by material type and thickness, sheet utilization, total cut length, assist gas, quantity and tolerance requirements. Repeat quantities and efficient nesting generally provide better unit economics than small one off orders.
After laser cutting, Seaborn can provide CNC press brake forming, hardware insertion, tube bending, MIG or TIG welding and robotic welding. Combining these operations under one production plan reduces handoffs and helps Cambridge OEMs maintain consistent fit between components and assemblies. Finishing such as powder coat can also be provided as part of the project.
