Materials We Process for Sheet Metal Fabrication
Steel and Carbon Steel Fabrication
Carbon steel remains the most widely used material for sheet metal fabrication due to its strength and cost efficiency. Common grades such as A36, 44W and 50W are well suited for forming and welding. Steel provides consistent results in production environments and is typically the most economical choice for sheet metal fabrication.
Aluminum Sheet Metal Fabrication
Aluminum is selected when weight reduction or thermal conductivity is important. Grades such as 5052-H32 are preferred for forming, while 6061 is used for plate applications. Aluminum requires controlled processing to maintain surface quality and dimensional accuracy. It offers weight savings compared to steel, though at a moderately higher material cost.
Stainless Steel Fabrication Services Windsor
Stainless steel provides corrosion resistance and durability in demanding environments. Grade 304 is commonly used for sheet and tube applications. While more expensive than carbon steel, stainless can eliminate the need for coatings in some applications. It is often chosen for exposure to moisture, chemicals or harsh operating conditions.
Industries We Serve in Windsor, Ontario
Windsor’s industrial base is heavily driven by automotive manufacturing and equipment production. Seaborn Manufacturing supports these sectors with repeatable sheet metal components and assemblies. Our fabrication services align with companies that require consistent supply and production quality.
Automotive Manufacturing
Windsor is a major automotive hub, requiring reliable suppliers for fabricated components. We support automotive and their Tiered suppliers with brackets, enclosures, frames and formed parts. Consistency and repeatability are critical in this sector, and our processes are aligned with those requirements.
Industrial Equipment and Machinery
Equipment manufacturers require fabricated sheet metal parts for machinery, housings, guarding and structural components. We supply production ready parts that integrate into equipment builds. Our fabrication process supports repeat orders.
Construction and Infrastructure
We fabricate sheet metal components used within construction systems and infrastructure projects. This includes panels, brackets and support parts manufactured in-shop. Our focus remains on component production rather than on site installation. We support many infrastructure projects.
Electrical Distribution, and Data Center Infrastructure
Having worked on many outdoor electrical distribution building and Data center shielding projects Seaborn is familiar with demand for these critical services in a modern, ever increasingly technology driven world. We are ready to take on your needs to support your next Data Center build.
Sheet Metal Fabrication Windsor – FAQ
Our capabilities include CNC laser cutting (to 2” steel) , press brake forming, CNC tube bending, tube laser cutting, welding and assembly. We support both sheet and tubular components for industrial applications. Production runs are managed with repeatability and consistency in mind. Windsor customers benefit from our stable and reliable fabrication services. We have everything in place to deliver the sheet metal fabrication Windsor needs.
Sheet metal fabrication generally begins with a flat sheet that is cut into the required blank shape and sizes using a laser. The parts are then formed using press brakes and may undergo welding or assembly. Each step builds toward a finished component ready for use in a larger system. Accuracy at each stage is critical to overall part quality
Design for manufacturability (DFM) focuses on optimizing a part so it can be produced efficiently and cost effectively. This includes simplifying geometry, reducing unnecessary tolerances and aligning design with fabrication processes. DFM helps lower production cost, improve lead times and reduce the risk of defects. Early collaboration leads to better production outcomes. DFM is all about keeping the design simple and clean.
Seaborn Manufacturing operates just down the 401 from Windsor in Waterloo, Ontario and supports Windsor and the surrounding region. Our location allows us to serve Southwestern Ontario with quality fabrication, production ready capacity and easy delivery
The big cost drivers for sheet metal fabrication;
- For clients, especially lower volume clients using fewer gauge sizes can reduce costs by eliminating set ups from the laser to the press brakes and making the most use of each sheet.
- Part size is a major factor in part cost. Parts just using more material, a bigger part often uses a smaller percentage of the total sheet. In Canada the most common sheet size is 5ft x 10ft so as soon as your part is over 5ft long you limit how many of that part can go onto a sheet to a single column of parts. If your part is 9ft x 3ft it will only yield on part per common sheet.
- Many times secondary operations like counterbores and countersinks offer no real benefit but do add extra steps and cost quickly.
- Making your parts square whenever possible makes everything easier. Jigs often need to be made to form irregular parts adding the expense of the jig and set up time.
- GD&T drives cost up quickly and is often misused. Adding GD&T callouts makes your part dimensional accuracy 3 dimensional which drives costs up quickly.
- Making your holes into a slot or ever so slightly larger generally costs near nothing on a laser when cutting the parts but can save you a lot of assembly time.
Metal fabrication uses flexible processes such as laser cutting, forming and welding to produce parts in a wide range of volumes. Metal stamping relies on dedicated tooling and presses, making it more suitable for very high volume production. Fabrication offers more flexibility for design changes and lower initial tooling cost. Stamping becomes cost effective only at large production quantities
