Laser welding offers lower distortion, and less heat input to achieve full penetration of weld. It is quite precise and extremely strong. For some applications it is far superior to other welding operations, but at this time it is not a complete welding solution capable of replacing all welding methods.
No. At this time we would not weld laser welding for anything thicker than 10 GA. Some say it is good to 3/16 even thicker but our tests do not support these claims. Nor have we seen anyone else produce a quality weld for anything that large. Including some manufacturers making the claims they can.
